Overview

A leading retail enterprise with a vast network of stores across the country set out to modernize operational oversight by enabling real-time visibility into critical retail data. The client envisioned a solution to bridge the gap between source systems and store-level data, ensuring consistency in SKU, coupon and promotional information.

The Challenge

Bridging data gaps across retail systems

To stay competitive in a rapidly evolving retail landscape, the client set out with a bold vision: to build a resilient, data-driven ecosystem capable of adapting to shifting business demands and scaling seamlessly with growth.

Pain points include:

  • POS transition introduced complexity in data flow and consumption
  • Store-level issues such as missing transactions, promotions and incorrect coupon applications leading to customer dissatisfaction
  • Limited visibility into where data breakdowns occurred — source, transmission or store level

What the Client Needed

The client needed a real-time, side-by-side data comparison tool that enables business users to detect and resolve issues independently, reduces reliance on IT and support teams and enhances transparency and speeds up issue resolution.

The Objective

Enabling self-service retail diagnostics

The client was looking for a strategic partner to deliver a modern, intuitive platform that could:

  • Provide real-time comparison of SKU, coupon and promotional data between source and store systems
  • Support dynamic configuration updates to stores without manual intervention
  • Offer role-based access to cater to diverse business functions such as sales audit, tax compliance, store operations and support teams
  • Scale to support nearly 1,000 stores with on-demand access and minimal latency
  • Reduce dependency on overnight batch processes and support teams for routine configuration changes

This solution was central to their vision of operational agility and data transparency across their retail footprint.

The Solution

Building a dynamic, role-driven Retail Hub

We designed and implemented the Retail Hub — a secure, intranet-based platform built on Angular and Java Spring Boot microservices. The solution established a dynamic, runtime connection to store systems, enabling real-time data comparison with the centralized source system to align with first-person brand voice.

Key components of the solution include:

  • Real-time data comparison: The platform retrieves and displays SKU, coupon and promotion data from both the source and selected store systems, allowing users to instantly identify mismatches and root causes.
  • Dynamic configuration engine: Business users can push updates — such as associate discounts, bag fees and transaction prompts — directly to stores without support team involvement.
  • Role-based access model: Tailored dashboards and tools were developed for different user groups:
    • Store business teams: Data comparison and configuration updates
    • Tax teams: Validation of tax rate applications
    • Sales audit teams: Monitoring of missing transactions
    • Store communication teams: Access to store-specific operational data
    • L2 support teams: Diagnostics for login issues and release tracking
  • Modular architecture: The loosely coupled service design supports future enhancements and integration with additional systems.
  • Security and auditing: The platform includes robust auditing capabilities and integrates with enterprise authentication systems to ensure secure access.

The Impact

Transforming retail operations through self-service

The Retail Hub improved operational efficiency with a 60% reduction in data-mismatch incidents, faster issue resolution and over 1,000 hours in annual support savings from dynamic store configuration updates. By enabling quicker identification of missing transactions, it also saved 10,000+ hours annually across multiple support teams while strengthening sales continuity and scalability through real-time configurations and role-based insights. Key outcomes include:

  • Faster issue resolution: Store teams can now independently identify and resolve data mismatches, reducing dependency on IT and support
  • Improved sales continuity: Accurate and timely application of promotions and coupons has minimized transaction failures
  • Operational agility: Dynamic configurations can be deployed instantly across regions or store clusters, eliminating delays from overnight processes.
  • Enhanced user experience: Role-specific tools and dashboards have provided business users with actionable insights
  • Scalability and future-readiness: The platform’s modular design supports ongoing enhancements and onboarding of new user groups

A roadmap for intelligent retail

The Retail Hub reflects HCLTech’s commitment to delivering intelligent, self-service platforms. With plans to integrate analytics, AI-driven diagnostics and broader system interoperability, the Retail Hub is set to become the digital command center for retail operations — driving agility, accuracy and innovation at scale.
